A 24-year-old Virginia man died Oct. 5 after he was struck by a pickup truck.
When he was struck, the 24-year-old was with a group of people and cars parked along the southbound shoulder of Route 1, south of South Croppers Circle, and he was standing on the right edge of the right southbound travel lane in the path of a 2003 Ford F250 pickup driven by a 50-year-old Fenwick Island man, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
The front right of the pickup struck the 24-year-old, throwing him onto the southbound shoulder. The pickup then continued southbound for about a mile before stopping at the Sunrise Shopping Plaza in Fenwick Island.
The 24-year-old, identified by police as Austin J. Powell of Suffolk, Va., was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 50-year-old was uninjured, but he was taken to an area hospital for an undetermined medical condition.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident and no charges have been filed at this time, Fournier said. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor on behalf of the truck driver or the pedestrian, he said. Route 1 southbound at South Croppers Circle was closed for about four and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
