A 61-year-old man was shot and killed Oct. 5 during a domestic dispute north of Milton.
Neighbors called police shortly before 10:30 p.m. to report a man and woman were having a domestic dispute in the 13000 block of Sunland Drive. When troopers arrived, they learned a 61-year-old man, later identified as John Pinto III, was armed with an unknown firearm and was threatening his wife, who was alone inside the house with him, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
Police established a perimeter around the home and spoke with Pinto on the phone. Pinto made threatening statements to the first responders, and as the conversation continued, gunshots were heard and the phone call ended, Fournier said.
Soon after, Pinto’s 60-year-old wife called 911 and reported she and Pinto had been shot.
Police entered the house and found the couple in a bedroom. Pinto was pronounced dead at the scene, Fournier said.
The Delaware Division of Forensic Science determined his death was a homicide by gunshot wounds to the upper torso.
The woman was taken to Beebe Healthcare before she was flown to Christiana Medical Center where she remains in critical condition due to gunshot wounds to her lower torso. The woman’s name has not been released.
The investigation is in its early stages as homicide detectives conduct interviews and collect evidence at the scene. More information will be shared as the investigation moves forward, Fournier said.
