Two men from Washington, D.C., died Oct. 21 when a driver blacked out and crashed an SUV on Route 1 in Dewey Beach.
Police said the crash occurred about 5 p.m., after a 61-year-old New York man suffered an acute medical event while driving a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban north on Route 1.
When the New York man blacked out, the Suburban crossed into the southbound lanes, and accelerated toward The Starboard Restaurant. James D. Walton, 53, and Richard G. Chittick, 58, were standing with their bicycles on the southbound shoulder and the sidewalk, and were unable to flee, said Master Cpl. Michael Austin of the Delaware State Police.
The front of the Suburban crashed into the two men and a utility pole, severing the pole at ground level. The vehicle continued into The Starboard parking lot where it hit an unoccupied Jeep and came to a stop.
Walton and Chittick were pronounced dead at the scene, Austin said.
The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Beebe Healthcare.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit continues an investigation and no charges have been filed at this time, Austin said. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any additional information is asked to call Cpl. N. DeMalto at 302-703-3267.
Route 1 was closed for more than five hours as the crash was investigated. Shortly after midnight Oct. 21, one southbound lane in the area of the crash remained closed, Austin said. Go to deldot.gov for real-time travel advisories.
