A car crashed into a construction vehicle on the Route 1 canal bridge Aug. 12, catching fire near Rehoboth.

Construction on the bridge had reduced traffic to one lane when the crash occurred at 1:46 a.m., said Warren Jones, spokesman for the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Co.

A 36-year-old Frankford man was driving a 2012 Ford Fusion southbound on Route 1 when it struck the rear end of a front-end loader construction vehicle, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police. The driver was not injured, Jones said; he was charged with driving under the influence, driving a vehicle at an unreasonable speed and following a motor vehicle too closely, Jaffe said.

His name was not provided, and the Cape Gazette does not name people charged with misdemeanor offenses.
