Veterans graduate from James H. Groves Adult High School
Donald Hirneisen, an 87-year-old World War II veteran from Millsboro, smiles as he receives his diploma from Patrick Cooper, Sussex Tech Board of Education president, and Dr. Susan Bunting, Delaware secretary of education. Hirneisen said, in his address to the crowd, “I love it here.”

Georgetown resident Cindy Dionicio Garcia holds her diploma with Patrick Cooper, Sussex Tech Board of Education president, and Dr. Susan Bunting, Delaware secretary of education. Garcia dropped out of high school at the age of 17 when she became pregnant. Garcia won one of the Distinguished Student Awards presented at the commencement.
Two Ethel M. Cook Memorial Scholarships were given at the graduation. This was the 26th annual scholarship donation made in honor of Ethel M. Cook, who graduated from Groves when she was 79. Dan Cook, a former James H. Groves teacher, presented Joshua Crumpler, left, and Mark Peterman, each with $1,000 to further their educations at Delaware Tech. Rep. Ruth Briggs King, R.-Georgetown, gave the keynote address. Briggs King said about the students, “They never stopped searching for that missing piece, a diploma.”
A World War II veteran and a Korean War veteran, along with 38 other students, received their high school diplomas at the commencement ceremony at James H. Groves Adult High School at Sussex Technical High School June 6. The keynote speaker was Rep. Ruth Briggs King, R.-Georgetown. Students also spoke at the ceremony and scholarships were awarded.
