Viking wrestlers go 7-1 at Iron Horse Duals

The young guns of the Cape Henlopen wrestling team with nine freshmen and sophomores across 14 weight classes competed in the Iron Horse Duals Jan. 3-4 at C. Milton Wright High School in Bel Air, Md. 

The 16-team field is divided into two eight-team brackets. There is a championship cross-bracket competition that serves as the finals. 

Cape went 7-1 over two days, defeating Boys Latin 54-30, Bel Air 54-21, Bishop Ireton 64-0, Leonardtown 64-12, Walter Johnson 68-12 and Oakdale 79-0.

The Vikings lost to bracket opponent Stephen Decatur Jan. 4 49-19. Cape later defeated Southern Garrett 42-27 in the third-place championship. 

Stephen Decatur was overall champion, defeating South Carroll in the championship bout. 

Mikey Frederick (145) and Lucas Rupert (285) each went 8-0 for the tournament. Frederick recorded six pins and an overtime win, while Ruppert had five pins and a major decision. 

Jackson Handlin was 6-0 for the tournament, alternating between the 195- and 220-pound weight classes. Andre Currie (170) went 7-0, including five wins by pin. 

Other Cape tournament records were CJ Fritchman at 126 (6-1), Carson Kammerer at 132 (5-1), Luke Bender at 138 (6-1), Finbar Rishko at 162 (6-2), Juan Lares at 160 (7-1), Gary Hayes at 182 (5-3), Cam Smith at 195 (4-3), Holt Baker at 106 (6-2), Josh Wright at 113 (1-3), Brody Smith at 120 (2-3), Brexton Carter at 120/126 (1-4), Bryan Garcia at 132/138 (2-0) and Malaki Lewis at 220 (2-1). Malaki earned his first varsity win. 

Cape will host Caesar Rodney Wednesday, Jan. 8. The Riders feature two state champions in the lineup in Jackson Dean at 152 and Kevin Hudson at heavyweight.
