The Cape swim teams took two victories from Indian River Jan. 22 at the Sussex Family YMCA.

The Cape boys’ squad (7-1-1)  swam to an 89-81 win, while the Lady Vikings (6-3) took a 127-28 victory.

Cape’s Thomas Weeks, Marcus Gromofsky, Josh Toback and Dylan Kaplan took first in the 200 medley relay in 1:50.14. Ryan Bixler followed with a first in the 200 freestyle at 1:57.07. Indian River’s Michael Barnes took the 50 free in 23.40 and the 100 free in 53.14. He also teamed with Patrick Banks, William Douds and Maximus Kohr to win the 200 free relay in 1:36.00. Banks also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.59. The 400 free relay was won by Barnes, Mitchell McGee, Declan Burke and Kohr in 3:33.91.

“It was an exciting meet that was a little close toward the end,” said Weeks. “We had a really exciting final relay.”

“Win or lose, everyone continues to work hard and get better to keep making the team better and better,” said sophomore Sam Schoenfeld. “Everyone on the team always tries their best to keep improving.”

The girls’ squad had an easier meet, dominating from the start and winning every event.

The 200 medley relay team of Madelyn McGreevy, Amaya Daisey, Aya Daisey and Erin Morrissey won in 2:03.47. Gabriella Robertson took the 200 free in 2:21.35. Amaya Daisey took first in the IM with a time of 2:32.53. Aya Daisey won the 50 free in 26.78. Melanie Fritchman took first in the 100 butterfly at 1:19.37. Morrissey won the 100 free in 1:00.82. Heidi Simmons won the 500 free in 6:18.28. The 200 free relay was won by Daisey, Daisey, Morrissey and McGreevy in 1:51.43. Sophie Schoenfeld took first in the 100 backstroke in 1:20.90. McGreevy took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.72 and the 400 free relay team of Robertson, Simmons, Lindsey Reynolds and Julie Heffernan took first in 4:35.05.

“Indian River was a fun team to swim against,” said Reynolds. “We are all grateful for every opportunity to compete and further prepare ourselves for conferences. We all keep a competitive attitude constantly, and that allows our team to further strive for success throughout the season.”

“We put in the work every day at practice to get better times,” said junior Anna Stancofski. “It’s nice seeing the hard work pay off at meets, like we got to see today.”

”Our kids swam with more intensity at this meet than in previous ones,” said Cape coach Bill Geppert. “I think we are coming together and helping at the right time leading into conferences and states. We still have a lot to work on, but we are headed in the right direction.”

The Cape coach also gave kudos to their opponent.

“Indian River always swims us tough,” he said. “Their coaches have them prepared, and every year it is an exciting meet. Our kids and their kids have a great rivalry due to our communities both being coastal, and we know each other well. Most of the kids work on or near the beach in the summer. It's always fun to compete against them.”

The Vikings will play host to Dover Thursday, Jan. 24.
