Vikings win volleyball battle with the Knights

October 7, 2019

The Vikings volleyball team took to the hardwood battlefield of Cape Oct. 3 to face the Golden Knights. When all was said and done, Cape pulled off a 19-25, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-17 victory to move to 4-5 on the season.

Rileigh Wilson and Bre Kusen led the Vikings with nine and eight kills, respectively. Katie Knarr, Simran Patel and Madison Mahoney teamed to put down 16 more. Abbey Derrickson put up 15 assists and 12 digs, while Alyssa Whaley added 12 assists. Emily Lamb added 10 digs.

“We made too many mistakes in the first set,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “We weren’t serving aggressively and our first contact of reception was really poor, and it hasn’t been like that most of the year and that hurt us. But I like our grit and I like our will. We stuck through, we followed the game plan we came out to execute, and that’s all I need from them. I’m happy. Set one was not good, but they fixed what wasn’t good and they had a real strong match.”

“I usually do get hits toward the libero,” said Mahoney. “But for this match, I tried to focus on hitting to the corners, and I tried to switch it up a little more than usual and try to mess up Bre [Reid] a little with her blocks.”

“I knew I had to be aggressive against Brenya,” said Knarr. “I didn’t really think about keeping it away from her, but I knew I had to be aggressive. We had a slow start today in our first set because we didn’t have energy. I feel like our season is going in a positive direction for sure. We started slow, but now I think we’re getting into our groove.”

“We didn’t properly execute in the first set,” said Derrickson. “I feel two, three and four we turned it around.”

The Golden Knights were led by Reid with 15 kills and six digs. Makenna Messina bumped 11 digs, while Madelynn McTeer garnered 11 assists.

The Cape junior varsity defeated the Knights JV 2-0 to move to 4-5 on the season.

The Vikings travel to Delmar Tuesday, Oct. 8 to take on the Wildcats. Central matches up with Sussex Academy on the Seahawks’ home court.
