Virtual author event series continues Oct. 12

October 7, 2020

Browseabout Books and Lewes Public Library will host a full schedule of diverse virtual author events in October. Discussions are live, interactive, and free to attend; registration is required.

A conversation with novelist L.M. Elliott is set for 4:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 12. She will talk about her newest middle grade novel, “Storm Dog,” a contemporary, whimsical story of a girl finding her voice through the redemptive magic of nature, music, a stray dog, and dog-dancing. This story took Elliott back to some of her first loves: the hills and streams of Virginia, school bands and the embrace of a dog in need of love.

Meghan Leahy will discuss her latest book, “Parenting Outside the Lines: Forget the Rules, Tap Into Your Wisdom and Connect with Your Child” at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 13. Filled with insights based on child development and hard-won lessons in the trenches, this honest guide presents a new approach, offering permission to practice imperfect parenting in an imperfect world with a strong dose of common sense, empathy and laughter. Readers will gain perspective on trusting their gut, picking their battles, and when to question what’s normal as opposed to what works best for their child.

A live, interactive discussion with Delaware experts Rachel Kipp and Dan Shortridge is set for 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20. Their new book, “100 Things to Do in Delaware Before You Die,” is a handbook to discovering diamonds in the Diamond State, from the warm ocean beaches to bucolic farm country, complete with family-friendly listings and must-do itineraries. Where else can one drive the length of the state in three hours, bump into a former U.S. vice president at Browseabout Books and see the preserved hull of a 1798 shipwreck, all in the same day? It may be one of the smallest states in the union, but Delaware has countless hidden gems to offer visitors and residents alike.

Former Rehoboth Beach resident Timothy Jay Smith will discuss his new novel, “Fire on the Island,” as well as the craft of writing and how he managed to succeed in a second career that is elusive to so many aspiring authors, at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Lambda Literary Award winner Lynn C. Miller will discuss her fourth novel, “The Unmasking,” at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28. Best friends Bettina, Miriam, and Fiona are shocked when their dean of liberal studies dies in a single-car accident amid accusations of mishandling university funds.

Cat & Mouse publisher and editor Nancy Sakaduski will close out the month at 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29, with a writing workshop focused on bringing characters to life in fiction. Well-drawn characters captivate readers, and add spark to stories and novels. Participants will learn how to develop intriguing characters, create authentic dialogue and put characters into motion. Topics include naming characters, showing relationships among them, and depicting characters that are different from oneself. Participants will come away with actionable skills that improve the quality of their writing.

These online events are offered through Zoom and are free to the public. Only those who register will receive information on how to join the sessions.
