Walk to End Alzheimer’s kicks off in Rehoboth

Annual event dedicated to raising funds for care, support and research
September 27, 2021

More than $155,000 was raised by 463 participants and 62 teams at this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s held Sept. 25 at Grove Park in Rehoboth.

On walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s during the Promise Garden Ceremony that signifies their solidarity in the fight against the disease.

Walkers receive a colored flower that represents their connection to Alzheimers: purple is for those who lost someone to the disease, yellow is for those providing care for someone with dementia, and blue is for those who have Alzheimer’s. An orange flower means the person supports the cause to end Alzheimer’s.

In Delaware, more than 19,000 people are living with the disease and being supported by 46,000 caregivers. Missy Baker of Delaware said she is walking for her mother, Doris Daisey, who was diagnosed in 2020. Four generations of the Daisey family comprising the Daisey Petals Team raised almost $2,500.

“She may lose her memories, but she’ll never lose her spirit,” Baker said. “The whole family is involved. We need a cure; that’s why we’re walking.”

All funds raised through the Walk to End Alzheimer’s further the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. For more information, go to alz.org/delval/walk.
