Wallace Ray ‘Wally’ Sheldon, true gentleman

August 7, 2018

It is with great sadness that the family of Wallace Ray (Wally) Sheldon announce his passing. Wally passed away peacefully, surrounded by love Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, at Bayhealth-Kent Campus, Dover.

Born March 15, 1932, in Elkton, Md., son of the late Crawford and Mildred, Wally was a remarkable son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather graduating from Elkton High School and Goldey Beacom College. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, followed by many years in the Delaware National Guard.

Devoted and loving husband to his 'Toots', Margaret M., for 62 wonderful years. Wally treasured their love, their family and their life together. Also surviving are sons, Dallas (Jennifer), Todd (Pam), and daughter, Alexis (David) Brower; grandchildren, Ian and Colin Sheldon, Avery (Brandi), Morgan and Emma Brower, and two beautiful great-grandsons. His faithful papillon, Gigi, his constant companion, and a host of fabulous friends that he held as chosen family will also mourn his loss.

Wally exuded an incredible work ethic, giving his all whether in a professional setting or enjoying great times with family and friends. His younger years were filled with sharp cars, dancing, figure skating, wonderful friends and summers on the beach. A meticulous man, an immaculate appearance, a sparkling clean car and an orderly life were his standard. His character was evident in the noble manner in which he walked, talked and lived his life. Adored by all that knew him, Wally was quick to smile and slow to anger. He was a friend to all and the epitome of a true gentleman with just enough orneriness to keep you smiling!

Strong in his faith, Wally attended St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Milton, where Father Tom White provided strength and comfort throughout the years.

Wally loved gardening and had an exceptional green thumb. The hotter the weather, the harder the task, the more Wally thrived creating his landscaping projects. He was never more satisfied then after a back-breaking day in the sweltering sun, to sit on the patio with a glass of his favorite Chianti and admire his handy work.

Wally retired (early) from Getty Oil Company where he served as pay master, meeting and boarding incoming vessels to deliver the crew's compensation. His early days of retirement were filled with golf, gardening and quirky odd jobs until landing him at The Movies at Midway, where he was a manager for 25 years. He thoroughly enjoyed the friends and relationships he made during those years.

A special thank you to Elaine Pinkowski and Compassionate Care Hospice for the loving care and guidance that went above and beyond words. The peace and comfort they afforded the family during this heartbreak will never be forgotten.

Those who knew Wally were witness to his gentle soul, his kind heart and his special character. He embodied the highest of virtues and was a true example of living your best life and making those around him be the best they could be at all times.

Services will be private, but please lift a glass, toast our beloved Wally and live life to the fullest. That would be his wish for you.
