We must elect Baker to the Senate 6th District

August 27, 2018

I was not lucky enough to know Dave Baker until a little over four months ago when I met him and his son, Joe, over coffee at the Rehoboth Diner. I heard about his candidacy and the respect that people who know him have for him, so I called to see if I could meet him. He offered to meet for coffee and a chat. I have since learned that’s the kind of person Dave Baker is.

His tightly knit family, his wife Sandy and four sons and their families, has been part of this district since he met Sandy when she served him at the Dairy Queen on Lewes Beach when they were kids. Dave spent more than 30 years working every day with Democrats and Republicans to improve the lives of Sussex County residents. He obtained critical funding for first responder services, sought and secured financing for wastewater infrastructure projects and open space preservation, and ensured balanced budgets without laying off employees.

All these lessons also brought knowledge of what needs to be done and is, as of yet, not done at the state level. I heard him say that although we account for about one-quarter of the population of Delaware, Sussex County receives only a small fraction of the transportation and infrastructure budget. No one is fighting for us to receive our proportionate share. Life-and-death issues in this district such as clean drinking water and a shortage of medical professionals have been sidelined. Even in a region such as ours where our daily lives, our economy and our sustainability depend on the health of the environment, it’s not receiving efforts toward its protection that it deserves.

Dave Baker’s priorities are transportation and infrastructure, medical care, clean water, environmental health and protection, and open space. Number one will be laying a solid future for our district, Sussex County and Delaware.

I am voting for Dave Baker to take the 6th District seat in the Delaware Senate and I urge you to vote for him, too.
