We need more medical cannabis offerings

June 5, 2020

Is medical cannabis essential? Yes it is, and I appreciate the state deeming it as such.

When I first heard the state was shutting down, I had great concern for access to my medication. The cannabis industry is run by private organizations that could have shut down, leaving me and thousands of other patients without medications that we use for a multitude of conditions.  I saw dispensaries change how they were handling ordering; now ordering is all done online at all three dispensaries.

This can create a huge disadvantage if you are not familiar with the products offered or you do not have internet access. It has also led to consumer panic, just as we’ve seen with other products.

We are two months into our COVID-19 quarantine and even though medical cannabis is essential, it is far from available. I have seen decreases in the strains and products available for patients. When you become a patient, you discover what strains are beneficial to your particular needs. Now patients are left wondering if the strains offered will help them. Will patients have to turn elsewhere to meet their medical needs?

I certainly hope that the dispensaries can keep up with demand as more patients join the program. This is why adult-use legalization and home cultivation is greatly needed in our state. It will ensure that there are more providers and more product options. It will lower prices by creating competition.

Patients need options to choose from.
