Labor Day is just around the corner, which means a new school year has either started or will be starting soon.
With that in mind, West Side New Beginnings and local businessman Shayne Brittingham teamed up to give away backpacks full of school supplies Aug. 29 in West Rehoboth. It was the sixth year for the giveaway. So nobody would leave hungry, hot dogs and barbecue chicken platters were provided to attendees.
Dilinda Deshields, West Side New Beginnings executive director, said hundreds of backpacks were prepared, and plenty of school supplies were provided. The ones that aren’t given away will find their way to the kids who need them, she said, adding that personal hygiene products were included among the supplies.
Brittingham said this year was the event's biggest giveaway.
"We gave over 150 food meals away to adults, over 100 book bags and meals to children, as well as raffling off three brand-new kids' bicycles," said Brittingham. "This year's giveaway has definitely given us a bigger vision and plan for next year."
Also in attendance were representatives from the Rehoboth Beach Police Department, the Cape Henlopen School District, Lewes Men of Achievement and Milton’s Rising Sun Lodge 4.
