Roger and Carol Whitford hosted their annual 9/11 ceremony to honor their son Mark, a New York City fireman who was killed during the terrorist attack. Hundreds of people turned out Sept. 11 for the 20-year-anniversary ceremony. Their memorial is a permanent installation, and the Whitfords said it’s open to the public for when someone wants a moment to reflect. The house is located northwest of Lewes at 17181 Minos Conaway Road.
Carol and Roger Whitford lost their son Mark in the terrorist attacks. They have hosted a 9/11 ceremony at their home outside Lewes for years. It was a solemn event, but Carol points to one of a couple dozen butterflies that were released at the end of the ceremony.
The Whitfords have a piece of steel from the World Trade Center in their yard, and Jerry and Elaine Ritzinger touch the relic during the gathering. Jerry is a retired fireman from Ladder 33 in the Bronx.
There were many flags at the ceremony bearing the pledge to never forget.
