Why ifs abound in our country now

September 21, 2021

Since we are without a local election to concentrate on, I suppose we must be subjected to the musings of one Don Flood who seems to have unlimited access to your letters section. All of Mr. Flood’s letters can be summarized as follows: “Trump bad, Republicans and Conservatives bad ... and crazy.” Don’s references to fanatics omits those from his ideological side of the aisle whose murderous exploits within the last year alone and dating back to the 1960s could fill pages, much less 650 words. Reference is made to a previous letter published in these pages of Feb. 8 titled “All Riots Matter.” Be that as it may, since Don seems to be always afforded response time in these pages, perhaps he could answer seriously the following Socratic queries, if he is capable.

What if the richest man in the world also owned the country’s leading political daily newspaper, headquartered in our nation’s capital and he was a conservative?

What if a Republican presidential challenger to an incumbent Democrat president, along with his party, pushed for widespread use of mail-in ballots in violation of, in several instances, the policies and prescribed procedures of their state constitutions and he narrowly won the election?

What if a young, unarmed, female, black Air Force veteran had been shot dead by a white Capitol Hill policeman essentially for trespassing on federal property in an unauthorized manner and she was protesting on behalf of any one of a number of left-wing issues or even perhaps a close election that didn’t go her way?

What if a few weeks before a close election, a story broke involving the son and brother of a Republican challenger to an incumbent Democrat president, alleging corruption that involved high-paying, no-show jobs to the candidate’s son, apparent payoffs from foreign governments and money laundering while also obliquely pointing to the candidate himself?

Evidence of same included a computer hard drive, multiple emails and a witness who appeared at a press conference corroborating the story with names, places, dates and times, and the media, including print, TV news and social media, largely ignored the story or squelched it entirely with the latter subsequently admitting before Congress that this had been a “mistake” and the incumbent Democrat won by a narrow margin.

Why on earth would anyone object to a close examination of election results in Arizona or any other tightly contested state when this would  emphatically confirm the results of same, pinpoint any irregularities in need of correction and leave “Big Lie” proponents with egg on their faces?
