William ‘Bill’ Sherman, retired commercial fisherman
William “Bill” Sherman, 92, of Milton passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford.
Bill was born in Harbeson and resided in the Harbeson and Milton areas his entire life.
Bill graduated from Milton High School class of 1945 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army. He served during World War II from 1945-47 and received an honorable discharge as technician fifth grade with the 1944th Engineer Aviation Battalion. Following his military service, Bill worked as a machine operator with General Foods in Dover for many years before retiring. Bill had a love for spending time on the water where he worked countless hours as a commercial fisherman and clamming. He also enjoyed being outdoors and gardening.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth (Sherman) Brown; his wife, Doris A. (Cahall) Sherman; a daughter, Gail Stamper; a granddaughter, Amber Sherman; and half-siblings, Diana E. Bradley Holloway, Raymond W. Brown Sr., Knoulton “Junior” Brown Jr., and Leona Jones.
He is survived by a son, Steve Sherman and wife Jamie of Bridgeville; a daughter, Lorraine Bogart of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three half-siblings, George G. Brown, Richard M. Brown and Brenda L. Gooner; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 16, at Henlopen Memorial Park, 28787 Lockerman Road, Milton.
