William K. Scott Jr., telephone co. retiree

William K. Scott Jr., 89, of Millville went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018.  He was born May 31, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of William K. Scott Sr. and Freida Scott. 

Bill graduated from John Bartram High School in Philadelphia in 1947.  Bill married his beloved wife Doreen Elinore Scott (Davis) Oct. 14, 1950.  Bill and Elinore formerly resided in Glenolden, Pa., while Bill worked for Bell Telephone in Philadelphia.  In 1956, Bill and Elinore moved to Millville.  

Bill served his county in the U.S. Army, serving in the 45th and 3rd Infantry divisions in Korea.  While serving, Bill was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Bill worked for Bell Telephone starting in 1947 and retired from Diamond State Telephone in 1982, with 30 years of devoted service. Bill established Delmarva Phone Company in 1983 and ran the business as president until 1997.  During his working career Bill established many long-lasting relationships, many of which remain today.

Bill’s passion for serving others continued in 1958 when he joined the Lord Baltimore Lions Club where he served his community for 60 years.  As a member of the Lord Baltimore Lions Club, Bill held the offices of president in 1965 and 1993.  Bill also served as club secretary for 18 years. Bill served Lions Club International as district governor for District 22D in 1974-75.  Bill earned his life membership in 1975.  Bill was declared a Ralph Helm Fellow in 1988, a Melvin Jones Fellow in 1989 and a James A. McCarty Fellow in 2008. Bill was named the District Lion of the Year in 2003. Bill also served the district as the district historian for the State of Delaware.  Bill was also a member of the Ocean View Church of Christ, St. Alban’s Masonic Lodge in Philadelphia, Mason Dixon VFW Post 7234 in Ocean View, life member of the Korean War Veterans, life member of the Lions Eye Bank of the Delaware Valley and the Delaware Lions Foundation.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Doreen; his parents William K. Scott Sr. and Freida; and a brother, Robert Scott.  He is survived by one son, Douglas and his wife Patricia of Millville; four grandchildren: Andrea M. Scott of Oviedo, Fla., Amos B. Scott of Arnold, Md., Nadene N. Hitch of Norristown, Pa., and Carrie A. Foskey of Frankford; and two great-grandchildren, Kaylei N. Kahoe of Frankford and Julia N. Robidoux of Arnold.

A visitation for friends and family will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Ocean View Church of Christ, 55 West Ave., Ocean View.  Interment will follow the reception at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
