Incumbent Rep. Alonna Berry, D-Milton, won a hotly contested primary challenge Sept. 15, with a 2,935-1,343 win over Ruby Schaeffer.
Throughout the primary campaign, Berry said she and her team reached out to voters to hear about issues that matter to them. She said she felt confident on primary election day that returns would be strong.
Berry took a strong lead in early voting with 1,553 votes to Schaeffer's 603. Absentee votes were a bit closer, but Berry still edged Schaeffer 313-209. Election day votes came in at 1,069 for Berry to Schaeffer's 531.
“I think we ran a good race with lots of engagement with voters through door knocking, phone banking, texting, etc.,” she said.
Moving into November, Berry said she will continue to meet voters where they are.
“District 20 is a very purple district – 30, 30, 30 – so we want to get out in front of the independent voters and the no-party voters and Republican voters, and listen and share how we’ve been helping the district over the past year," she said.
Berry now faces Republican Gene Dvornick in the General Election.
In a three-person Republican contest for District 41, former legislator John Atkins won with 1,546 votes over Douglas Conaway’s 1,479, and Jacki Slonin’s 149. Atkins will face Democrat Ryan Stuckey in the November election.
Republican incumbent Rep. Bryan Shupe, R-Milford, cruised to a victory over Patrick Smith 1,531-681. Shupe now faces Democrat Andy Gorlich in the November election.
The biggest upsets of the night were pulled off in upstate races where longtime Democrat representatives Stephanie Bolden and William Carson were primaried out of their seats by newcomers Michelle Booker and Tyeisha Grier, respectively. With no Republican opponent for the General Election, both newcomers assume the seats.
Another incumbent representative, Democrat Franklin Cooke of New Castle, was beat by newcomer Pamela Salaam. First-term Democrat Sen. Ray Seigfried lost to Shay Frisby, and first-term Democratic, Rep. Josue Ortega lost in a four-person Democratic primary to Branden Fletcher-Dominguez. Both will face a Republican and an Independent candidate in November.
