A 24-year-old woman was injured Aug. 11 following a bicycle crash on Route 1.
The woman from Poland was riding her bike at 8:15 p.m. northbound along the southbound lanes of Route 1 approaching the Royal Farms on Route 24 when she was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe pulling out of the parking lot, said Sgt. Richard Bratz of the Delaware State Police.
The Tahoe was stopped waiting for southbound traffic to pass when he drove onto Route 1 at the same time as the bicycle approached, hitting the left side of the bicycle, Bratz said. The woman was ejected from the bike which overturned on its right side, he said. The driver, a 48-year-old Rehoboth Beach man, came to a stop in the middle of southbound Route 1, Bratz said. The driver was properly restrained and not injured.
The woman was initially transported by ambulance to Beebe Healthcare; she was later airlifted to Christiana Hospital where she is being treated for head trauma. Bratz said she was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Her bicycle was equipped with both a front headlight and rear taillight, he said, but it is unknown if the lights were activated.
Impairment does not appear to be a factor on behalf of either the driver or bicyclist, Bratz said.
