Woman killed crossing Route 1 near Rehoboth

January 15, 2020

A 68-year-old Rehoboth Beach woman died Jan. 8 after walking into traffic on Route 1, police say.

Eduarda De Jesus Andrade De Ayala was wearing dark clothing and had no light when she crossed Route 1 north of Munchy Branch Road at 8:02 p.m., said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.

Ayala was crossing in an easterly direction when for unknown reasons she stepped from the median into the path of a 2019 GMC Terrain traveling northbound in the left lane, Jaffe said. The driver, a 29-year-old Rehoboth Beach woman, did not see the pedestrian, and the left front of the GMC struck the pedestrian in the left lane, Jaffe said.

The driver was properly restrained and was not injured. She remained at the scene. Ayala was taken to Beebe Healthcare where she was pronounced dead.

Route 1 northbound had partial lane closures for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
