Women’s Club of Milton awards scholarships

July 16, 2019

Three young women, all graduating seniors from Cape Henlopen High School, were each presented $2,000 scholarships by The Women’s Club of Milton June 11, at the club’s annual luncheon.

The recipients this year are Erin Cannon, Isabella Leishear and Stephanie Philcox.

The young women excel in academics and community service, and have many talents ranging from dance to music to sports. Choosing from the impressive applications proved to be a difficult job for the scholarship committee. Its members recognize that there are a number of talented and gifted young women in the Milton community.

Stephanie Philcox swims and sings, and signs in three languages. She was active in Best Buddies, the National Honor Society, the Leo Club, and was an intern at the elementary school level helping young students with special needs. Her love of music and her ability to play both the guitar and piano is a gift from her grandfather. She plans to make music the cornerstone of her future career by healing others through music with a background in psychology. Stephanie will attend Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania.

Erin Cannon excels in both academics and sports. She was a member of the National Honor Society, volunteered with the Leo Club, participated in Best Buddies, supported community service, and mentored with the Sussex Consortium program. She will study marketing and 3D design. Erin will attend Marymount University in Virginia.

Isabella Leishear hopes to save precious natural resources through environmental efforts. Also a member of the National Honor Society, she is dedicated to continuous learning. She performs in a jazz group and theater, volunteers, and has held leadership positions in environmental organizations. With an eye on becoming a citizen of the world, her dream job would be working with National Geographic. Isabella will attend the University of Delaware this fall.

Each of the three 2019 recipients spoke briefly at the club luncheon and all have accepted the invitation to be docents at the Annual Milton Holiday House Tour when they return home in December. The Annual Milton Holiday House Tour, a major club fundraising event, will be held Saturday, Dec. 14.
