Women’s Club of Milton awards scholarships

July 14, 2018

The Women's Club of Milton presents two, $2,000 scholarships each year to two young ladies from the Milton community. The field of applicants was outstanding for 2018, and it was a very difficult job to select only two awardees. This year, the recipients of the scholarships are Camryn Breasure and Taylor Messick. The scholarships were presented at the Women's Club President's Luncheon at the Rookery North in June.

Camryn graduated from Delmarva Christian School and was recognized for her outstanding personal achievement and academic excellence.

Many of her teachers said Camryn is a leader among her peers and respectful to all. She has demonstrated leadership qualities as a student academic leader, not only through her excellent grades but also by conducting review sessions for her peers. She has maintained her standing on the A Honor Roll throughout her high school career and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Camryn is a stellar athlete, participating in three varsity sports: volleyball, basketball and softball, during all four years of high school. She was captain of her teams, scholar athlete, all-conference for each sport, and was 2018 Player of the Year for basketball. Along with her 25 hours of necessary community service and an additional 10 hours required by National Honor Society, Camryn expanded her community service through her church by being a member of the Teen Challenge group. She has journeyed to Jamaica to interact with the children of that country and built houses for the less fortunate there.

Camryn will attend Flagler College in Saint Augustine, Fla. She recently interned with a school psychologist and wishes to further her knowledge in this area of study.

Taylor graduated from Sussex Central High School with an exemplary academic record, having taken Advanced Placement classes as well as classes through Delaware Tech. Her areas of interest include a love of animals, biology and video production. She will major in mass communication with a minor in biology at Towson State University.

Her varied experiences with 4-H, the Technology Student Association, and the docent program at the Salisbury Zoo have provided her with experiences for community service, leadership roles and developing confidence. Taylor has been a member of Hollymount 4-H since 2010 and Sussex County 4-H Junior Council since 2015. She has served as president of her local 4-H. She received the Sussex County leadership pin in 2017. She expanded her leadership qualities by being a camp counselor.

In the school's broadcasting program, she took on the role of lead producer for two biweekly shows. Her broadcasting instructor said Taylor takes on more responsibility than the average student in the broadcasting program.

Taylor's community service included making dog treats for animal shelters, participating in canned food drives, making tray favors for Meals on Wheels and being a Hopkins Farm tour volunteer. Taylor feels that Towson State University will provide her the opportunity to continue to grow as she develops her interests. Her independence, sense of responsibility and determination should advance her toward her goals.

The Women's Club of Milton members wish these two outstanding young females great success in their future endeavors. For more information about the club, contact Linda King at 302-354-8470.
