Women’s clubs partner to clothe Cape students in need

December 7, 2018

In a first-time joint effort Nov. 15, three Sussex County women’s clubs worked together to distribute clothing to in-need students at Cape Henlopen High School. The district’s Clothing Closet Program serves approximately 125 students.

Over the last few months, members of the GFWC Zwaanendael Women’s Club, the Women’s Club of Milton and the Village Improvement Association collected and sorted winter and school-appropriate clothing. On distribution day, identified students were able to shop for needed items. VIA President Carole Suchanek said, “It was a pleasure volunteering with members of the Zwaanendael Club and members of the Women’s Club of Milton, and the students were pleasant, polite and so appreciative.”

Otis Blackburn, the CHHS interventionist who works with students on their food, housing, clothing, and employment needs, said that this clothing program is one example of the many ways the community supports the students, and that he is overwhelmed by that support for the youth in our area. Distribution days are held twice during the school year with individual distributions made on an as-needed basis.

The GFWC Zwaanendael Women’s Club based in Lewes, the Women’s Club of Milton and the Village Improvement Association based in Rehoboth Beach are all 501c3 nonprofit corporations and members of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.
