Women in Law Enforcement group donates to service dog program

August 9, 2022

The Mid-Atlantic Association for Women in Law Enforcement presented a check to Kent County Chapter 850, Vietnam Veterans of America, for its CASH/Canines Assisting Service Heroes program at the July 28 monthly chapter meeting.

The association holds an annual Mid-Atlantic conference, and in October 2021, it was hosted in Rehoboth Beach. After conference expenses were paid, remaining funds were dispensed to a charitable cause. Delaware State Police Sgt. Kristin Smith co-chaired the conference committee and recommended a contribution to the CASH program, which her board approved. Smith volunteers for a local dog rescue and was familiar with CASH, having helped facilitate the donation of a rescued dog that was matched with a Delaware veteran.

Chapter 850 includes more than 230 members and 35 associate members. CASH has provided nine service dogs, with another in training. The year-long training program by Riedel K9 of Middletown costs $12,000 and includes healthy dog vet visits for the awardees. Visit k9ash.org for information and to support the program.
