Youth tobacco control summit set Jan. 18-20

January 14, 2019

The Delaware Kick Butts Generation will celebrate its 20th anniversary of youth tobacco control in Delaware at a special summit Friday-Sunday, Jan. 18-20, at Embassy Suites Newark/Wilmington South.

A group of 200 youth from across the state will attend this fun weekend of training, skills building, tobacco-control education, team building, bonding and more. Teens will leave the summit with a better understanding of the dangers of nicotine and tobacco – including e-cigarettes – and how to talk with their peers.

“KBG was instrumental in promoting and gaining support for the Delaware Clean Indoor Air Act,” said Deb Brown, chief mission officer for the American Lung Association. “For the past two decades, the American Lung Association has been extremely proud to have worked with young, passionate groups of teens who help save future generations from a lifetime of tobacco addiction.”

KBG promotes tobacco-free parks, beaches, and playgrounds, in addition to clean air for everyone.Youth involved with KBG also realize the dangers of e-cigarettes and are committed to keeping their peers from using these products by spreading the truth about e-cigarettes and educating Delaware youth on the tactics tobacco companies use to hook teens on them.

“We are extremely excited to be kicking off the 20th anniversary of the Kick Butts Generation,” said Matt Coyle, health promotions specialist, American Lung Association. “I went from being part of KBG as a youth to today having the opportunity to work and lead this talented group of kids who are working hard to keep their peers tobacco-free in Delaware.”
