Zwaanendael Women present dorm supplies to Cape students

Baskets of Basics save each student $250
June 24, 2018

The GFWC Zwaanendael Women’s Club presented baskets of dorm room supplies to seven Cape Henlopen High School students who are pursuing higher education.

Following the May 23 presentation, students and their families enjoyed refreshments with club members and school staff.

The Baskets of Basics program, which began three years ago, is intended to assist college-bound students during their transition from home to dormitories and apartments. It is part of the club’s community improvement program that was awarded first place at the GFWC Delaware 2018 convention.

The baskets, each valued at $250, include bedding supplies of a foam topper, mattress pad cover, two sheet sets, blanket and pillow; bath towels, laundry detergent; fan; trash can; flash drive; lamp; storage bin; shower shoes; toiletries; shower tote; and a laundry basket.

College-bound Cape students who participate in the free/reduced lunch program are eligible to apply for the baskets. The application includes a written essay on their volunteer experiences and how those experiences enriched and impacted their lives.

Cindy Winkler, community improvement program chair, said, “The Basket of Basics program is the club’s way of congratulating these students on their academic achievements and let them know the entire community is proud of their choice of higher education. This year’s recipients will be attending University of North Carolina, Wilmington; Delaware Technical Community College; and the University of Delaware.
