‘The Paris Bookseller’ author conversation set Jan. 25
The Lewes Public Library and Browseabout Books will welcome author Kerri Maher for a live, online discussion of her new historical fiction novel “The Paris Bookseller” at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 25, via Zoom.
Maher’s book reveals the dramatic true story of how a humble bookseller fought against incredible odds to bring one of the most important books of the 20th century to the world. Sylvia Beach opened Shakespeare and Company bookshop on a quiet street in Paris in 1919, and it soon became the site of some of the most important literary friendships of the 20th century – none more so than the one between Irish writer James Joyce and Sylvia herself.
When Joyce’s controversial novel “Ulysses” was banned, Beach took a massive risk to publish it under the auspices of Shakespeare and Company. Maher’s story follows Sylvia through her successes, and later, her painful personal and financial crises that force her to decide what Shakespeare and Company truly means to her.
