Delmarva Christian kindergarten visits Milton CHEER Center

March 27, 2016

Each year, Brenda Ward and Sue Mohr, kindergarten teachers at Delmarva Christian Schools Milton Campus, take their students on a service-oriented field trip. This year, it was a visit to the CHEER Center in Milton.

“A long time ago, the school had us do one field trip that was considered our missions trip,” said Ward. “Mrs. Mohr and I have just kept with this tradition each year. So we consider this our kindergarten missions trip. We usually go to a nursing home, but this year, we wanted to try something new, so we went to the Milton CHEER Center. This was our first time, and we absolutely loved it there.”

On a visit March 9, the students met Silver Wings, a 3-year-old therapy miniature horse from Angelic Touch Therapy Animals in Lewes, and visited with the seniors. The students sang Bible songs and delivered paper kites they had made.

“We talk with the children about being a missionary and what that means,” said Ward. “We tell the children that we are being missionaries by bringing Jesus to the CHEER Center. We show them the love of Jesus through our songs and by giving them a small gift, like the kites we brought them, and, of course, by our smiles and good manners that we use when we go to visit them.”

Each year’s trip has its standout moments, and often the teachers enjoy the visit as much as the students do.

“The visit was awesome,” said Ward. “We can't wait to do it again. The kids' favorite part was, of course, grooming and petting the miniature horse, but the teachers' favorite part was seeing how well the children sang their songs to the members of the CHEER Center. The children did so well! It made us so proud of them."
