Dr. Jani to speak at Nassau Valley Vineyards Farmers Market Aug. 26

August 20, 2018

Dr. Uday Jani will present Plant the Seeds of Healthy Living at 11 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 25, at Nassau Valley Vineyards. The farmers market will follow from 12 to 3 p.m. Jani is a leading integrative physician in the area. Attendees will learn how natural foods nourish, restore and heal the body.

“As both a physician and an involved member of the community, I’m thrilled to see the rising preference for organic, unprocessed foods,” said Jani. “There is a growing appreciation for the important role of fresh fruits and vegetables in a healthy diet. There is no better place to find the season’s bountiful selection than at this well-curated farmers market.”

Jani will discuss new insights on topics such as gluten-free, plant-based and vegan diets; benefits of opting for freshly pressed instead of processed juices; pain-relieving powers of essential oils; and nutrient-dense foods as a natural remedy for managing depression and anxiety.

“The latest research identifies 12 nutrients proven to be key in the prevention and treatment of depressive disorders: folate (vitamin B9), iron, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, potassium, selenium, thiamine (vitamin B1), vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C and zinc. The foods richest in these include leafy greens such as kale and spinach, wild salmon, nuts, beans and seeds,” said Jani.

Foods featured at the farmers market, such as mushrooms and green teas, may prevent chronic disease due to the presence of antioxidants.

“Mushrooms contain selenium, which prevents inflammation, and the abundance of vitamin D has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by helping regulate the cell-growth cycle,” said Jani. “Green tea is also rich in antioxidants and polyphenolic compounds, primarily catechin/epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which may provide protection against diseases including heart disease, diabetes and cancer.”

The Nassau Valley Vineyards Farmers Market runs from April through September and features an elegantly diverse selection of locally grown produce - squash, peaches, beets, radishes, tomatoes, herbs, lettuces, melons, blueberries, and mushrooms. Also available are organic honey, milk, cheeses, meats, dog food, pastries, breads, teas, Costa Rican coffee and beautiful artisanal crafts.

“A visit to a farmers market is an ideal family outing, supporting individual healthy lifestyles as well as our community,” said Jani. “Understanding the source of what you’re eating by talking with and purchasing from local farmers is the next best thing to growing it yourself. And there are so many ways to engage your children in the process by sampling new vegetables, trying a piece of vegan pizza or browsing through organic treats for their pets.”

Jani urges all to attend. He said, “You’ll go home with a tote bag brimming with fresh fruits and vegetables, tips on how to prepare and incorporate these whole foods into your diet, and a real sense of satisfaction in helping local farmers and artists thrive.”
