A 22-year-old Georgetown man faces a rape charge after police say he say he sexually assaulted a woman, 20.

The incident happened at 6:30 p.m. June 20 at a home in Georgetown, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.

Clay D. Conaway was indicted Aug. 20 by a grand jury on a first-degree rape charge.

The one-sentence indictment states Conaway “did intentionally engage in sexual intercourse with [name redacted] without her consent, and during the commission of the crime, did cause physical injury.”

Jaffe said Conaway was taken into custody at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22. Because of the sensitivity of this case, and in consideration of the victim, only limited information will be released, she said.

Conaway was brought before the Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $70,000 secured bond. According to court documents, he made bond on Aug. 23 and was arraigned in Sussex Superior Court at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24. Carl Kanefsky, spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office, said Conaway pleaded not guilty to the rape charge.

News of his arrest was released two hours later.

As reported in the Cape Gazette, Conaway was a student at University of Delaware, where he was a pitcher on the baseball team. Before transferring to Delaware, he played baseball at University of Maine. He graduated from Sussex Central High School in 2014, where he played baseball and wrestled, and he also attended and played baseball for DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland.

University of Delaware's baseball roster no longer lists Conaway. Andrea Boyle Tippett, spokeswoman for UD, said Conaway is no longer on campus.
