5K event in Dewey to benefit burn survivors April 27

March 14, 2019

The mythical bird, the phoenix, is said to rise from the fiery ashes with a brilliant shine to gain new life.

Teens, firefighters and wounded warriors who have undergone disfiguring and traumatic encounters with severe burns are able to to experience positive transformation at a special camp for burn survivors.

Through their nonprofit organization Joining Forces, Brian and Allison Carlisle are bringing the inaugural Flight of the Phoenix 5K run and walk fundraising event to Dewey Beach at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 27.

Brian Carlisle said, “My profession has taken me around the country to facilities that help patients with physical disabilities. I have been so moved by Allison Massarri, the founder of the Roger Pepper Adventure Camp for Teenage Burn Survivors, that my wife and I are dedicating our time and efforts to help the camp assist burned children and others, and to reach our goal of $25,000. I know the citizens and visitors in the Sussex area and the state of Delaware have a strong sense of giving back. That’s why we selected Dewey Beach for our inaugural event.”

The Adaptive Sports Center located in Crested Butte, Colo. enhances the quality of life for people with disabilities through exceptional outdoor adventure activities. One activity is the Roger Pepper Adventure Camp for Teenage Burn Survivors, which some survivors from the local region have attended. The camp will be the beneficiary of proceeds raised by the Flight of the Phoenix 5K. Attendees will also learn about fire prevention, precaution, and protection.

Hosting the event will be Gary’s Dewey Beach Grill and 38°-75° Brewing located at 2000 Route 1, Dewey Beach. The run will be followed by a fun festival of food, beer for those age 21 and over, music, kids’ games, and programs offered by state firefighters. There’s something for everyone.
