Tunnell Cancer Center receives $30K from flounder tournament

The Flounder Pounder Open, hosted by Paradise Marina and Short’s Marine, is the largest flounder tournament in the world. 

The 2018 event, held in August, raised $30,000 for Beebe Healthcare’s Tunnell Cancer Center, with $50 from every boat entry donated to Tunnell, along with a portion of the winnings from several participants.

“Every year, we are excited to partner with our local businesses, Paradise Marina and Short’s Marine, to raise awareness in our local community to support our Tunnell Cancer Center,” said Tom Protack, Beebe Medical Foundation vice president of development. “Every year, our county is growing with more patients and families who need our oncological services, and thankfully, every year, this great flounder tournament raises more money! It is a win-win for everyone.”

“We are honored to choose the Tunnell Cancer Center as our beneficiary every year,” said Al Tortella, owner of Paradise Grill and Marina. “My family has been touched by cancer and, no doubt, many of our boat teams have loved ones struggling with cancer. It is a great opportunity for all of us to have some fun fishing while raising money that stays locally here in Sussex County. A special thanks to Makers Mark, Determined, Stalker, Yahoo’s, and Garrison Homes, teams that donated a portion of their winnings back to Beebe Healthcare’s Tunnell Cancer Center.”
