Veterans Stand Down volunteers to meet March 28

March 24, 2019

Organizers of Delaware Veterans Stand Down recently met for their first planning meeting for the 11th annual stand down, set for Friday, Sept. 20, at Shuttle Park in Dover.

New volunteers are welcome to the next meeting at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 28, at the Commission of Veterans Affair, 802 Silver Lake Blvd., Suite 100, Dover.

Stand Down events are for veterans who need assistance, some of whom may be homeless. The Delaware event is one of the annual projects carried out by the Veterans Awareness Center Foundation in Greenwood, a nonprofit created by Liz Byers-Jiron, her husband Bill, and their daughter Mindy.

A team of about 35 volunteers work for eight to nine months to create each event. Contributors and volunteers from businesses, government, nonprofit organizations and others from across the state come together each year to help veterans in need of a friendly hand up.

Last year more than 1,100 veterans were provided a meal, clothing, medical services, entertainment and access to advisors from multiple private and government organizations.
