May 6, 2020

Cape High grad and country music star Jimmie Allen will provide the commencement address at Cape’s virtual graduation ceremony Tuesday, June 9.

Principal Nikki Miller said the celebration of seniors kicks off Monday, June 8, with Journey of the Class of 2020, a drive-thru experience at Hudson Fields. Miller said time and details will be released as the date approaches.

The virtual graduation ceremony begins 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 9, and will feature a traditional graduation program, including valedictorian and class president speeches and the announcement of graduates by their class advisors.

Milton native and Cape High Class of 2004 grad Jimmie Allen, whose single “Best Shot” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart November 2018, will address students. Since moving to Nashville in 2007, Allen has toured with country music stars Toby Keith, Kane Brown and Rascal Flatts, and now headlines his own tours.

Allen has consistently returned to the Cape Region to perform free concerts at district schools, as well as local shows in which proceeds have benefited H.O. Brittingham and Rehoboth Elementary PTOs. He was nominated New Male Artist of the Year by the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2019.

Miller said all graduates will receive a downloadable copy of the ceremony after the event. Details for viewing, including the online link, will be provided as the date approaches, Miller said.

“We are still planning to provide our graduates with an opportunity to walk across the stage and celebrate their achievements together once the appropriate restrictions have been lifted,” Miller said. “We know this is important to both our students and families, and we will provide details on this plan once we are able.”

On June 10 and 11, district staff will deliver personalized signs and diplomas to seniors’ homes.

“At that time, we would like for the graduate to come outside in their cap and gown, so that we can snap a photo of them holding their diploma with their families, if they wish,” Miller said. “We will then mail the pictures to them over the summer.”

Miller said a drive-thru pick up set for May 28 and 29 will allow seniors to pick up their caps and gowns and drop off any school materials; specific details will be sent to students and parents.

Finally, Miller said, school officials are developing a plan for annual senior awards and will send out information when the plan is finalized.

“We are and will continue to work hard to be sure the Cape Henlopen High School Class of 2020 is recognized appropriately and knows how much their community cares about them,” Miller said.
