Gertie Wee Thomas, church deaconess
Deaconess Gertie Wee Thomas, 90, of Millsboro, daughter of the late Allen and Sarah Williams, was born April 16, 1931, in Elizabeth City, N.C. She departed this life Friday, Sept. 10, 2021.
She completed her formal education in Elizabeth City. In her early 20s, she would move to Lincoln, and later settle in Millsboro. On Nov. 10, 1952, she married her sweetheart, James Thomas. They were married for 50 years. This union produced six children: Laura Morris, William Allen Thomas, Marilyn Thomas, Calvin Thomas and Emanuel Thomas. At St. John 2nd Baptist Church, she sang in the Senior Choir and she was a member for nearly 60 years.
Throughout the years, she worked in various production jobs such as King Cole and finally retiring from Vlasic Foods. She volunteered with the Helping Hand Club in Millsboro. We will remember her for her love of RC and orange sodas, Mr. Goodbar candy, chocolate cake, as well as being best known for hand-rolled dumplings and “throwing down” in the kitchen. She never missed watching her daytime stories and then, setting her television on TBN. In addition, she will be remembered as being a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend.
She was predeceased by her husband, Deacon James Edward; eldest son James H. Thomas; three sisters, Hazel, Lillian and Nellie Mullen; and two brothers, George Lee Williams and John T. Williams.
She leaves to cherish her memory, six children; Laura Morris (Lloyd) of Lewes, William Allen Thomas of Milford, Marilyn Thomas (George) of Millsboro, Calvin Thomas of Newark, N.J., Emanuel Thomas of Millsboro, and daughter-in-law, Emmer Thomas, wife of the late James H. Thomas; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives as well as a very loving church family at St. John 2nd Baptist Church.
We won't say that she will be sadly missed because we have too many happy and precious memories of her. On Sept. 10, we believe she went to be at rest with her sweetheart, James, and in the bosom of Abraham. So, we echo her favorite songs: “Your Grace and Mercy” and “On the Rough Side of The Mountain.”
Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, at noon, at St John 2nd Baptist Church, 26602 Mt. Joy Road, Millsboro. Family and friends may visit two hours prior to service.
