A chimney fire near Argos Corner Jan. 3 caused damage to a home and a traffic backup on Route 1 as emergency vehicles responded.
The fire was reported at 1:54 p.m. on Wildflower Lane off Route 1 as crews from Milton, Ellendale, Milford, Slaughter Beach and Lewes responded. As one fire engine headed south on Route 1, a car pulled out in front of it, causing the engine to skid broadside across Route 1, blocking the path of other engines heading south, according to the Delmarva Firefighter Forum.
Firefighters who got to the home found smoke coming from the rear, and learned that the fire started in the area of the chimney. Fire burned through the first and second floors of the home, Milton officials said. Units were at the scene for about two hours.
