Millsboro man dies following Bridgeville crash

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Bridgeville area May 4.

The crash happened at 10:40 a.m., as a 2002 BMW 325 operated by an 88-year-old Millsboro man was traveling northbound on Atlanta Road approaching the intersection at Federalsburg Road when it failed to stop at the posted stop sign, said Sr. Cpl. Leonard DeMalto of the Delaware State Police. The BMW proceeded northbound directly into the path of a 2011 Ford Transit van operated by a Maryland woman, 50, who was traveling eastbound on Federalsburg Road, DeMalto said. The Ford struck the left side of the BMW, which then exited the north edge of Federalsburg Road and struck a fence before coming to rest. The Ford van rotated in a counterclockwise direction and exited the north edge of Federalsburg Road before coming to rest, DeMalto said.

Both operators were properly restrained. The driver of the Ford was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries. The driver of the BMW was transported to an area hospital for serious injuries; he succumbed to his injuries on May 8. Identification of the victim is pending notification of relatives.

The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this collision. Troopers ask anyone who witnessed this collision to contact Senior Corporal R.
