Mary B. “Betty” Markland Hatfield, Conley's Church member

Mary B. “Betty” Markland Hatfield of Angola By The Bay, Lewes, formerly of Boothwyn, Pa., passed away suddenly Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Hatfield was born Nov. 14, 1923, in Chester, Pa. She was raised and educated by Norman and Mary Butler in Andrewsville. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School, Greenwood, and Goldey-Beacom Business College in Wilmington.

Mrs. Hatfield was employed as a secretary by DuPont Co. in Seaford. She married the late Abner N. Markland in 1943 and moved to Boothwyn, where she resigned to become a devoted homemaker and mother.

Mrs. Hatfield was a lifelong member of Faith Community Church in Brookhaven, Pa., and a member of Conley’s United Methodist Church in Lewes.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanne A. Markland in 1945; her two husbands, Abner N. Markland in 1992 and Luther P. Hatfield in 2005. She is survived by her son, Thomas Christopher Markland and his wife Barbara of Chadds Ford, Pa.; her daughter Tamara L. (Markland) Knox and her husband Michael of Boothwyn; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren; a sister, Pauline M. Shepard of Newark; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to her Celebration of Life service Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Conley’s United Methodist Church, 33106 Jolyns Way, Lewes. The visitation will begin at 2 p.m. followed by the service at 3 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 1, at Lawn Croft Cemetery, Ridge Rd., Linwood, Pa.
