Lewes earns DRBA Commissioners Cup for football win over Cape May

September 22, 2014

Lower Township, N.J. Mayor Michael Beck took the Cape May-Lewes Ferry across to Delaware Sept. 22 to officially congratulate Lewes and the Cape Henlopen High School football team for its win over Cape May Regional High School earlier this month.

The Vikings hosted the Caper Tigers Sept. 13 at Legends Stadium and walked away with a 53-0 win. In a short ceremony at the Lewes ferry terminal, Beck handed the Delaware River and Bay Authority Commissioners Cup to Lewes Mayor Ted Becker.

“This is only on loan,” said Beck. “We're getting this thing back at the first opportunity.”

In 2010, the two schools renewed an old rivalry that had last been contested in the early 1980s.

Cape May won the first game in 2010, and Cape Henlopen took the second meeting in 2011. The schools took a two-year break in 2012 and 2013, before the rivalry was renewed again this season.

DRBA sponsored the trophy because of the maritime connections between Lewes and Cape May.

“It seems as though there are always new reasons to connect the two communities,” said Scott Green, executive director of the DRBA.

Becker agreed.

“There is so much going on between Lewes and Cape May, and this is just another illustration of how we can build bridges between the two,” he said.

The Vikings' lopsided win over Lower Cape May Regional High School was not a fluke. In its three games this season, Cape has outscored opponents 131-7. The team will be back in action at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 26, when they travel to 0-3 Caesar Rodney.
