Shields students spend summer reading

Returning students at Richard A. Shields Elementary in Lewes participated in the first Summer Reading Program at the school. Over 100 students participated in the program, reading 138,254 minutes, or 2,304 hours.

The top reader of the program was Madison Costello, who logged over 9,600 minutes. Madison’s mom said a lot of the time Madison read was not even logged. Madison will receive a $100 gift certificate to Amazon.

The top boy and girl in each grade received a prize pack from Browseabout Books. Each student who participated will receive two gift certificates to local establishments.

Prizes were donated by Browseabout Book, Chick-fil-A of Rehoboth, Rita’s, Sno-Yo, Snyder’s Candy in Rehoboth Beach, Sweet Frog, 2 Dips Ice Cream in Lewes, Midway Movies, Philly Pretzel, Friendly’s, Kids' Ketch and Puzzles in Lewes.

Grade winners were, by grade, name and minutes: fifth grade - Madison Costello, 9,689 minutes, and Jack Somerfield, 7,943 minutes; fourth grade -Lily Manlove, 2,617 minutes, and Tyler Belson 1,640 minutes; third grade - Anna Drevno, 4,925 minutes, and Dylan Baker, 1,290 minutes; second grade - Jack Thomson, 1,677 minutes, and Shelby Manlove, 1,456 minutes; first grade - Gabe Ross, 1,730 minutes, and Jerny Haines, 1,480 minutes.
