Beat the Heat

Despite this latest cold spell, we have had a mild winter here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Unfortunately for our dogs and cats, particularly the stray population, our predominantly warm weather leads to an extended breeding season and more puppies and  kittens being born. Pet overpopulation is a major problem for our community and one that leaves animal shelters and rescue groups packed full of animals needing homes. Spaying and neutering prevents these animals from breeding, preventing worsening  overpopulation.

Spaying and neutering isn’t just important at the community level. For individual pets, it can provide health and behavior benefits as well. Spaying and neutering can reduce the risk of certain types of cancers, prostatic diseases, and life-threatening uterine infections. “Fixed” animals are less likely to attempt to escape and roam. Unwanted behaviors like marking can also be reduced. For you, the pet owner, there are the benefits of not having the significant cost of caring for unwanted litters or finding homes for all the offspring.

We hold regular spay/neuter surgery days for owned cats and the feral population most Wednesdays. The cost is $60 for female cats, $40 for male cats, including a  rabies vaccine. If you do not need a rabies vaccine you must provide a copy of the rabies certificate the morning of surgery. The surgery price will then be $10 less.   Feral cats will be done for $35 which includes a rabies vaccine and ear tip. Owned cats must come in a plastic carrier and feral cats must come in a trap. Additional  services such as FIV/FELV testing, FVRCP vaccines, microchipping and flea treatment may be added for an additional charge. If you are on public assistance you may qualify for a spay/neuter certificate from the State. You must call ahead to schedule an appointment for this service. For dog owners, we can spay/neuter your small dog or puppy as long as it is under 7 years old and weighs less than 50 pounds. The cost is $260 for females and $160 for males. This service can only be done on certain days so it is important that you call ahead of time and get on the schedule.

The front desk is open to take your calls from 10:00-6:00pm, Tuesday-Friday.
