Hispanic, Dragon Boat Festivals Highlight This Weekend's Coastal Events Calendar

September 13, 2017

We hope you're enjoying what's been a fantastic start to southern Delaware's Fall Festival Season. We've had some great events in the last couple of weeks, and this weekend is certainly more of the same, highlighted by the Hispanic Festival in Georgetown and the Dragon Boat Festival in Lewes.

And for those of you who love traveling to nearby Ocean City, mark your calendars for next weekend and the 2017 Sunfest festivities in Maryland's favorite summertime resort.

This week's events are spread throughout the county, so be sure to leave enough time to get to where you need to be. From Georgetown to Lewes, Fenwick Island and Dewey Beach, there's plenty to do over the next few days here in southern Delaware.

Okay, on to this week's featured events. We start in Georgetown and one of the area's most diverse fall festivals...

Festival Hispano (September 17). This fun annual festival celebrates the Hispanic culture, which has been the fastest growing demographic in southern Delaware for many years now.

This 22nd annual event is held in the Sussex County Seat of Georgetown and includes great music, folk dances, lots of delicious Hispanic food and a special area reserved for children.

Now held for the second time on Race Street in downtown Georgetown, after several years at the Millsboro Little League complex, Festival Hispano has become one of the highlights of the fall and is one you surely don’t want to miss.

The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information on the 2017 Festival Hispano, call 302-854-9262.

Lewes Dragon Boat Festival (September 17). A fundraiser for the Sussex Academy, this is the fifth year for this unique festival that's held at the Canalfront Park in downtown Lewes.

The festival is highlighted by the dragon boat races on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, where 20 paddlers propel 46-foot boats much like you would a canoe. There are generally three boats that race at a time, with fans along the canal cheering the teams on.

This has quickly become one of the most enjoyable events on southern Delaware’s fall festival calendar. Visit www.lewesdragonboat.com for more information.

Freeman Stage Arts & Jazz Festival (September 16). Once again this summer, quality entertainment has been featured at the local gem that is the Freeman Stage, near Fenwick Island. But this Saturday will be one of the best of the year, with several talented jazz artists scheduled to perform.

While enjoying the music, you can also stroll the grounds and preview the artwork of many of the Delmarva Peninsula's finest artists.

This event begins at 10 a.m. and is FREE to attend. For more information, visit www.freemanstage.org.
