‘Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson Musical’ continues April 19-20

April 18, 2024

Sussex Academy’s high school theater performances of “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical” will continue at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20, at 21150 Airport Road, Georgetown.

The show is an eccentric stage adaptation of Rick Riordan’s 2005 novel turned series, with music and lyrics by Rob Rokicki and book by Joe Tracz.

The story follows Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old kid who wants to find out who he is. After getting kicked out of school, he finds out he’s the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Zeus, the king of the gods, gets angry because he believes Percy has stolen his lightning bolt. So Percy sets out on a quest with his best friends Grover and Annabeth to find the lightning bolt and return it to the gods.

“The Lightning Thief” cast stars sophomore Carter Huffman as Percy Jackson, junior Elaina Marsch as Annabeth and senior Aidan French as Grover. It also features junior Zach Burger as Luke, senior Nex Hagen as Chiron, senior Nick Donati as Dionysus, junior Caroline Carlisle as Sally Jackson, sophomore Abby Whitcomb as Clarisse, junior Alex DeEmedio as Silena Beuregard, and senior Finn Sheridan as Katie Gardner.  Every cast member involved has a featured role, so not one student is left out of the spotlight. In total, more than 60 students have been involved with the show’s production, both on stage and behind the scenes.

“The Lightning Thief” has challenged the performers in every aspect, from learning new onstage techniques to honing their preexisting skills. The cast and crew members are excited for audiences to see their fight choreography, an element new to Sussex Academy theater performances.

“The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical” contains strobe effects and fog that may trigger viewer sensitivity. Audience members should use discretion.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. To purchase, go to showtix4u.com or buy at the door. There will be one 15-minute intermission at which snacks and drinks will be sold.
