‘Racing Demon’ to be read for Lenten experience April 6, 7

March 25, 2017

The Bethany Area Repertory Theater announces a staged dramatic reading of David Hare's “Racing Demon”  at 7:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday, April 6 and 7, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Ocean City, Md. During this Lenten season, the presentation, in collaboration with local-area clergy from parishes in both Delaware and Maryland, is intended to foster a deeper understanding of what both divides and unites people of faith.

“Racing Demon,” first of a trio of plays about British institutions, premiered in 1990 and takes place in South London at a time when the Church of England was in turmoil. Through the struggles of four clergymen trying to make sense of their mission, it tackles issues such as the ordination of women and gays, and the role of evangelism in inner-city communities.

"The staged reading of ‘Racing Demon’ deals with many of the issues facing pastors and churchgoers of all faiths," said the Rev. Gregg Knepp, St. Peter's pastor, "and people of all faiths will be able to relate." The show is directed by the Rev. Rusty Hesse. He says, "By having active clergy from a variety of denominations play the main characters, the passion of the play comes from the heart of those of us that deal with the issues of church, state, and of the people every day."

Tickets are $25. All proceeds benefit the participating local churches and the BART Scholarship Fund. The church address is 10301 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, Md. For more information, call 302-539-7324.
