48th annual Special Olympics Summer Games take over at UD

607 athletes compete in event

The 48th annual Special Olympics Summer games were held at the University of Delaware athletic complex June 8-9 with 607 athletes and 82 unified partners competing in bocce, power lifting, motor activity training, softball, swimming, tennis, and track and field. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in each event along with hugs, smiles and applause and tears of joy.

Teams competing were the Wilmington Wizards, Newark Dragons, MOT Tigers, Kent Wild Cats, Sussex Riptide, Team Delaware, Laurel High School, Meadowood Program of the Red Clay Consolidated School District, Networks Program of the Christiana School District and Special Olympics Virginia.

Along with the sports activities, the Healthy Athletes program was held on the green in front of the Blue Hens football stadium, where athletes were offered free programs, such as Fit Feet, Healthy Hearing, Opening Eyes and Special Smiles.

It was the 30th games held at the University of Delaware.
