9th Annual Big Wheel Race set Aug. 12 in Dewey

August 5, 2017

In 2008, a group of friends in Dewey Beach got together and formed Team Dash for a Cure, to benefit the Susan G. Komen three-day walk for breast cancer. The team was required to raise $2,300 for participation in the walk, and in their efforts to raise that amount, they founded the Big Wheel Race at The Starboard Restaurant.

The premise was simple: get the community involved in true Starboard style! This meant wacky outfits in the spirit of breast cancer awareness (pink!) and a drag race featuring adults on children's three-wheelers. What could be better? The festive event was a hit, and so it stuck, and as these traditions have a way of doing, it grew.

Team Dash for a Cure donates the funds raised during the Big Wheel Race, now in its ninth year, directly to Dewey Goes Pink, the October 5K race hosted by The Starboard, which raises money for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. The fundraiser features lots of events that are fun for the whole family including an obstacle course, drag races for both kids and adult kids, the Decked Out Big Wheel contest, Bra Pong, prizes, and an auction.

Suzy Casey, organizer of the Big Wheel Race, says, "It's exciting because whether it's T-rexes racing or even marriage proposals on the race track, you never know what's going to happen during the event!" She extends much thanks to Steve "Monty" Montgomery, owner of the Starboard, and his staff: "We are so grateful to him, and to everyone who takes time out - including the other local businesses. Many people do it because breast cancer is something that touches so many of our families." Casey knows many who participate in honor of loved ones, like DJ Manny Mann, who takes time out of his busy summer schedule to emcee the event in honor of his wife, who is a breast cancer survivor.

Everyone really embraces the day and breaks out their best breast cancer awareness get-ups. Expect to see a sea of pink from wigs to tutus, boas, and tons of flamboyant trikes ready to race to the finish. Montgomery encourages everyone to come out for a family-friendly day, and an event close to his heart. "This is an event we do that just brings everyone a good feeling, and a sense of community. Everyone who turns out to support us in these causes means a lot to us, and we're always very thankful," he said.

Registration begins at 1 p.m., and the races start at 2 p.m. There is a $20 per rider entry fee, but no one has to race to participate. Contact Casey at 302-465-1970 or suzycasey2011@gmail.com
