Accident halts southbound traffic on Route 1

August 16, 2017

A crash involving multiple vehicles and a street sweeper snarled southbound traffic on Route 1 near Pelican Shopping Center, just south of Postal Lane, about 10:30 a.m., Aug. 16.

Five vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred as Lewes resident William A. Musgrove, 46, was operating a 2016 Delaware Department of Transportation street sweeper. Musgrove had just pulled onto southbound Route 1 and was traveling in the far right lane, preparing to pull into the bus lane when he failed to see traffic stopped in front of him, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of Delaware State Police.

The street sweeper hit the back of a 2015 Chrysler 200, which spun counter-clockwise and hit a 2016 GMC Acadia. The Chrysler then veered across the southbound lanes, into the far left lane, and hit a 2007 Chevrolet Impala.

When the Acadia was hit, it crashed into the back of a 2006 Ford F150 pick-up truck.

Musgrove was taken to Beebe Healthcare where he was treated and released with nonlife-threatening injuries. He was cited for inattentive driving, Fournier said.

The female driver of the Chrysler and four passengers, the female driver of the Acadia and two passengers, the female driver of the Impala, and the male driver of the Ford truck all were taken to Beebe Healthcare where they were treated and released.
