After-school program at Milton Elementary hosts showcase

November 21, 2017

"Yes! I can have my electronics as soon as I get home because my homework is finished," said Timia, stashing her completed homework in her folder. Andres said, "Ah, man," as he realized that his favorite club was ending. This is common chatter one will hear during Milton Elementary's FAME program, offered after school to students in second through fifth grades. The program runs two hours, three days a week. Time is allotted for physical activity, homework, enrichment clubs and snacks.

FAME's recent celebration included six fun-filled activities that the students and guests rotated through, as well as treats provided by Grotto Pizza Grand Slam. An obstacle course highlighted the Athletics Club. Mask-making spotlighted the Arts and Crafts Club. During Circle Chat, participants shared their favorite parts of the day.

The Technology Club facilitated music-making music with the Sketch It, Play It! Station. At the STEM Club booth, participants popped popcorn using vinegar and baking soda. At Games, Games, Games, family members and guests were challenged to some friendly competition at board games These activities provided a small peek into what happens during the program.

FAME's after-school program joined 8,000 similar programs in celebrating the 18th annual Lights On Afterschool event showcasing their activities to the local community, parents and school officials. Jodi Grant, executive director of the Afterschool Alliance, said, "We want organizations across America to shine a light on the extraordinary things that are happening in their programs." Hence the name, Lights On Afterschool, which was born in 2000.

More than 11 million students are left alone and unsupervised after school each day. Programs similar to FAME help working families solve this dilemma and create enrichment opportunities for the children. With after-school and enrichment program funding on the federal and state chopping blocks, this celebration was a great way to convey to the public and families the importance that every child has access to quality, affordable after-school programs. FAME is funded through a federal 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant.
