Alvin B. Conaway, Farmer of the Year

May 30, 2018

Mr. Alvin B. Conaway, 90, of Georgetown went home to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, May 25, 2018, with his family by his side. Mr. Conaway was born in Laurel May 13, 1928, to the late Raymond L. and Verdie Elliott Conaway.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Angie Conaway, in 2007, as well as a stepson, Robert M. Hurst Jr., in 2002, and a stepgrandaughter, Ashley Hurst, in 2017.

Alvin was a 1947 graduate of Laurel High School where he played football, and held the title of president of the FFA. The love of farming began as a young boy, helping his parents on their farm. Later in life he founded his own farm, the ABC Farms, which consisted of poultry, grain and livestock. Even at the age of 90, he still didn't want to call himself retired, as he was always involved in the farming operation in some capacity. In 2017 he was named the Sussex County Farmer of the Year.

He was a founding member of the Dagsboro Church of God and loved attending church, volunteering whenever he was able to help out, and loved his church family. He was past Sunday school superintendent and taught Sunday school for adults as well as children. Alvin was a fine example of a Christian man, family-oriented and devoted to his family.

Alvin is survived by his wife of nine years, Ruth Conaway, of Georgetown; two children; Diane Conaway Rogers and her companion, Bob Lingo, of Georgetown, and Kenny Conaway and his wife Peggy of Georgetown; a stepdaughter, Alicia Reneé Stockwell, and her husband Bruce of Port Richey, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Mae Smith, and her husband David of Bridgeville; and a brother, Granville Conaway, and his wife Dorothy of Georgetown. He also leaves behind four grandsons: Troy Rogers, Shawn Rogers, K.C. Conaway and Timmy Rogers; 14 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren. He is also survived by many extended family members and friends.

A funeral service and celebration of his life will be held at noon, Friday, June 1, at the Dagsboro Church of God, 32224 DuPont Blvd., Dagsboro, where friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon for a time of viewing and visitation. Burial will follow at Carey's Cemetery in Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Dagsboro Church of God, 32224 DuPont Blvd., Dagsboro, DE 19939, or Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

Arrangements by Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro.
